2022 Marks a Milestone for Jeep in Adweek

The crop of 2022’s widely esteemed ads demonstrates the readiness of creatives and brands to go out on a proverbial limb or, in Jeep’s case, quite a literal one, as it offers both a skilled nod to 2001: A Space Odyssey and the Earth’s animal kingdom in “2022: Earth Odyssey.” The ad became so memorable that it managed to nab the second overall ranking in Adweek’s “30 Best Ads of 2022,” the only automotive commercial to make it on the list. The efforts to devise the ad matured ever since it first premiered in early 2021.
The Birth of “2022: Earth Odyssey”
In the early stages, the campaign featured the Jeep Wrangler 4xe, the first plug-in hybrid announced for the brand in the United States in 2020. The Wrangler’s upgrades, especially in its powertrain, make it an eco-friendly option for Wrangler enthusiasts. Then again, other than that fuel-efficient hybrid powertrain, the 4xe is still a Wrangler, meaning it is constructed with the idea of off-road. Still, as opposed to the traditional Wrangler, the Wrangler 4xe’s battery-only option provides drivers with an opportunity that is singularly exclusive to this trim. Electric motors are silent, so utilizing battery-only mode. At the same time, off-roading will permit drivers and their passengers the convenience of enjoying nature without having to endure the blaring drone of the engine. To heap on the praise, the Jeep Wrangler 4xe is the best-selling plug-in hybrid in the country.
Jeep’s next iteration of the ad introduced the all-new 2022 Grand Cherokee 4xe in accordance with the brand’s ever-expanding lineup. This SUV, like the Wrangler 4xe before, closes the gap between pure gasoline-powered and pure battery electric vehicles. In other words, plug-in hybrids integrate a gas engine with a powerful electric motor and a battery. The Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe has proven so efficient that Green Car Journal has recently awarded the vehicle the 2023 Green 4×4 of the Year.
Animals Make for Distinctive Commercial
Jeep knew it was tapping into something special with these automobiles because nature remains prominent throughout the commercial, especially with the clever captioning of the animals’ growing crescendo of musicality, such as “iguana belts major 3rd” and “buffalo punish timpani.” Their orchestral arrangement emphasizes the practicality and, more importantly, the virtual silence of the plug-in hybrids’ engines. The Jeep Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe are positioned as environmentally sensible without forsaking their off-road capabilities or heritage, precisely what the brand wants consumers to pay attention to.
According to Olivier Francois, global chief marketing officer, Stellantis, “It’s an honor to have our ‘2022: Earth Odyssey’ commercial recognized by Adweek. And my creative team and I are equally humbled to have this spot, which holds a very special place in all of our hearts, celebrated as it represents the commitment of the Jeep brand to become the global leader in SUV electrification.” Clearly, the acknowledgment Jeep has now garnered due to its Adweek campaign only symbolizes the tip of the iceberg in terms of the feats it seeks to accomplish.
Zero Emission Freedom
The brand is advancing its electrification toward “Zero Emission Freedom,” as they have dubbed the project. As such, Jeep, with its impressive 80-year history of inventiveness and records, is leaning toward a different notion of mobility, one that underscores fuel efficiency, adventure, and respect for the environment. The Jeep brand is undoubtedly resourceful, aiming for an electrified variant of all vehicles by 2025.
