2023 Jeep Compass has Been Redesigned for Competitive Advancement

The Jeep Compass has gone from strength to strength since 2021. It received a much-needed interior and systems upgrade, and for the 2023 model year, the SUV gets an all-new powertrain. With 13 percent more horsepower and 28 percent more torque, the new 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine delivers 200 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque. This means the engine is quieter, more responsive, and gets better gas mileage.
As a higher-tier trim, the Trailhawk is replete with amenities, including off-road ruggedness, but all variants benefit from newly-standard all-wheel drive. There is also an eight-speed automatic transmission that shifts just as well as its nine-speed predecessor. A suite of safety features round out the updates for 2023, such as a rear seat warning and a driver alertness monitor.
The Interior of the 2023 Jeep Compass
For an SUV that is relatively small on the outside, the Compass provides spacious front and rear seats. Even with the base trim, Car and Driver was “impressed with the legroom in the back for passengers and pointed out that it’s a comfortable ride, even on long drives.” Indeed, the vehicle’s soft springs meant to absorb shocks and uneven terrain on challenging trails, also imply a fairly quiet and subdued ride.
In addition, its digital systems have vastly improved, with a now-standard 10.1-inch display that broadcasts information alongside Stellantis’ exceptional UConnect 5 software. At a time when many designs would seem a bit outdated, the Compass is undergoing a rebirth. Android Auto and wireless Apple CarPlay are incorporated if the driver is not fond of the native interface, and Amazon Alexa integration is also standard.
Specifically, the Trailhawk and Limited trims boast an impressive 10.3-inch digital driver’s display unit with two dozen customizable readouts. Moreover, a nine-speaker Alpine audio system is optional on Latitude and higher trims.
The Trims
Of note, there are eight trim levels on the 2023 Jeep Compass. While the introductory Sport trim starts at just under $30,000 MSRP (Plus destination fee), the range can extend beyond $40,000 MSRP (Plus destination fee) for the High Altitude trim with options. That said, Jeep has added a great deal of value to the Compass in the last two years, so consumers are purchasing a materially better vehicle. The entry-level Sport trim is a tempting choice, especially considering the second-rung Compass Latitude adds only a few extra features like a proximity key, but it does provide the $1,795 Driver Assistance package and a host of other options. If a buyer is searching for those features, this is the lowest point of entry to them.
The Altitude begins with a price tag of $34,785 MSRP (Plus destination fee) and is essentially a blackout-trim cosmetic package for the Latitude, so the value there is subjective. Above those is the Trailhawk, and its price starts at $36,490 MSRP (Plus destination fee). Its extra ground clearance and specialized off-road hardware are truly worth the price of admission. Furthermore, the Trailhawk undercuts the Ford Bronco Sport Badlands on cost.
Granted, there are other upper level trims to take into account, like the Limited, RED edition, and High Altitude, but those prices are perilously close to larger SUVs, including the lower-trim Jeep Wranglers. As such, the Sport trim is the Compass to buy. In fact, Car and Driver sums it up concisely: The Sport is “affordable, offers AWD, and has plenty of safety features like forward collision warning and blind spot monitoring.”
