While we all are truly excited and looking forward to the future of electric vehicles, companies like Jeep, Ram, and Dodge are planning to offer a few things during this transitional period. In order to keep its commitment to making half of its vehicles battery-electric by 2030, Stellantis had a small team of engineers work on a brand-new, clean-sheet engine that they’ve called the Hurricane. This engine will truly take you by storm!

In the Eye of the Storm

This brand new engine will be a family of new twin-turbo, 3.0-liter I-6 engines, and will feature the Standard Output (ā€œSOā€) and High-Output (ā€œHOā€) versions which are already ready for production. It will offer ā€œmore than 400 horsepower and more than 450 lb-ft of torqueā€ according to Stellantis, giving it a max of 5,800 rpm on the Standard Output version. The High Output version will offer ā€œ more than 500 horsepower and more than 475 lb-ft of torqueā€ at up to 6,100 rpm. This engine will not only meet every current North American emissions requirement, but Stellantis has also claimed that the SO puts out 15 percent less CO2 while the HO will produce 13 percent less. This is keeping the company’s brands stay on the mark for their Carbon Net-Zero by 2038 initiative.Ā

The efficient promise that will blow you away

Micky Bly, Stellantis Head of Propulsion Systems had this to say “As Stellantis aims to become the U.S. leader in electrification, with a 50-percent battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales mix by 2030, internal combustion engines will play a key role in our portfolio for years to come and we owe it to our customers and the environment to provide the cleanest, most-efficient propulsion possible. The Hurricane twin-turbo is a no-compromise engine that delivers better fuel economy and an important reduction in greenhouse gases without asking our customers to give up performance.”Ā

A focus point to take note of for efficiency is the number of shared components between both of the variants being released (the High Output and the Standard Output). It shares a total of 96 common parts. Even with this unique factor, the turbochargers still remain unique to each of the two variants. While the Standard Output achieves a peak boost of 22 PSI, the High Output can achieve a peak boost of 26 PSI.Ā

Powering through to the future

While Stellantis did not specify which vehicles would be getting these incredible engines, with the knowledge that its STLA Large and STLA Fram vehicle platforms have been confirmed to use the Hurricane engine family. This is good news for brands like Ram, Jeep, and Dodge as this is a huge part of their vehicle selection. We can always count on Stellantis to continue pushing boundaries, so the future for their vehicles is looking very bright.
