The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon was a product created under wraps, with the engineers bringing the trim into existence and being affectionately called “The Lunatic Fringe.” When the Rubicon first premiered in 2003, it turned out to be an unexpected success for Jeep, and since then, it has ascended to be responsible for 25 percent of all Wrangler sales. The 10th anniversary trim in 2013 amped up the performance to a fever pitch. Still, for the 20th anniversary in 2023, Jeep has risen to the occasion even more with more excellent off-road capability and performance for consumers seeking to own the most favorable perception of the Rubicon, the 2024 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 20th Anniversary Edition.
Jim Morrison, senior vice president and head of Jeep brand North America, manages to capture the pride that twenty years of achievement have brought to the company: “That same spirit of determination and ingenuity that led to the creation of the Wrangler Rubicon lives on in these new 20th anniversary special editions, which for the first time, bring available 37s to the Wrangler, providing unmatched capability.”
The Wrangler 4xe and the Wrangler 392: Two Unparalleled Off-Road Vehicles
Unlike the 10th anniversary trim, the 20th anniversary trim aims attention at the Wrangler 4xe and the Wrangler 392, with Jeep declaring that this setup permits buyers to have two distinctive options of trail-ready performance. The exterior design forges ahead with the essential basics from the original Jeep Wrangler. Still, the 20th-anniversary versions receive badging, a specific grille treatment, and an exclusive graphics package. Besides a plethora of equipment and off-road enhancements that pay attention to ways to make these SUVs more capable on rugged terrain, other benefits include the following:
- Steel rock sliders
- A Gorilla Glass windshield
- An integrated front off-road camera
- Steel bumpers (winch-capable front)
While the exterior styling of each automobile improves upon a brawny, assertive appearance, the interior, on the other hand, lends itself to a greater touch of luxury. For example, trademark red accents identify this variant as a Rubicon, a set of integrated auxiliary switches for aftermarket equipment and all-weather floor mats.
Where the Real Upgrades Lie
The vast majority of the upgrades, however, can be found just underneath the body of the SUVs, with the brand making a thorough arrangement of advancements that cater to performance and off-the-beaten-path-roughness. All Rubicon 4xe 20th Anniversary editions are outfitted with massive 33-inch BF-Goodrich All-Terrain K02 tires, while the Wrangler 392’s incorporated Xtreme Recon Package increases the tire size to 35 inches.
Nonetheless, Jeep is not the only one getting into the congratulatory spirit that the occasion merits; the individuals over at American Expedition Vehicles (AEV) are also expressing their enthusiasm and have developed a new “20th Anniversary Level II” package that is exclusive to just 150 units. The package tacks on 37-inch all-terrain tires mounted on 17-inch Savegre II wheels, AEV 7000 Series off-road lights, a Warn-sourced front winch, and numerous other AEV additions. The 4xe variation of the package even gets an upgraded axle ratio, with the Wrangler 392 receiving it immediately from the point of production. Both AEV and Jeep claim that the upgrades offer a maximum water fording depth of 37.1 inches, 14.2 extra inches of ground clearance, and approach, break-over, and departure angles of 50, 33, and 43 degrees, respectively.
Availability
The limited run of 2023 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 4xe 20th Anniversary and 2023 Wrangler Rubicon 392 20th Anniversary, available for order in February 2023, start at a price of $69,585 MSRP (Plus destination fee) and $90,895 MSRP (Plus destination fee), respectively. This pricing offers a glance at how much the automotive market has changed over the course of 20 years, and it is far from the $24,385 MSRP (Plus destination fee) that an all-new 2003 Rubicon had when it was available for sale in Jeep dealerships. Then again, these automobiles now come equipped with enhancements that could not have been imagined in 2003, let alone the monumental gains they have garnered for the automaker.
