On July 5th, 2023, global automaker Stellantis revealed information about, and even a few pictures of, its all-new STLA Medium electric vehicle platform, which was first announced along with three other electric vehicle architectures back in July 2021 during the EV Day presentation. To clarify, the new STLA Medium platform is set to underpin a plethora of battery-powered variants in the C- and D-segments. Described as a global BEV-by-design platform, the new architecture is expected to take the global automotive giant into the heart of the midsize electric vehicle market, potentially accounting for up to two million SUVs and cars per year.

The Goals Surrounding the STLA Medium

It is worth noting that the carmaker has not announced which products will be based around STLA Medium. Still, it is widely expected to underpin a varied selection of vehicles, including automobiles such as the Peugeot 3008 and the Alfa Romeo Giulia replacement. It strives to take the automaker’s electric car aims to the next level, with Stellantis pledging a best-in-class range of up to 700 kilometers for cars outfitted with a Performance Pack and 500 kilometers for vehicles featuring the Standard Pack.

Not only that, the company is also aiming for class-leading efficiency, with energy consumption said to be as low as 14 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per 100 kilometers on the most economical versions. Moreover, the platform utilizes a 400-volt electrical architecture to allow exceedingly quick charging times. According to Stellantis, vehicles based on this platform can charge up from 20 to 80 percent in 27 minutes. That is a rate of 2.4 kilowatt-hours per minute.

The Expansion of the Platform

Vehicles based on STLA Medium will be sold globally and be available with front-drive propulsion or all-wheel drive with the addition of a second electric drive module at the rear. Power outputs are expected to range from 160 kilowatts to 285 kilowatts. Not only will the architecture accommodate several body styles, including normal SUVs and passenger cars, but it will enable numerous sizes, with lengths, for example, varying between 4.3 and 4.9 meters and wheelbases from 2.7 to 2.9 meters. As a matter of fact, a ground clearance of more than 220 millimeters is also possible, alluding to the fact that it will certainly underpin some Jeep trims, as well.

Regarding engineering, the STLA Medium platform extensively uses lightweight and rigid materials while placing a single-layer battery pack in the floor to lower the center of gravity and maximize space efficiency. Furthermore, elements such as steering, the cabin heating and cooling system, propulsion, and braking assist were designed to reduce energy consumption. It is also designed with provisions for future battery chemistries, including nickel- and cobalt-free and solid-state batteries.

Carlos Tavares, Stellantis CEO, elaborated upon the time and energy dedicated to bringing the company’s ambitions to fruition: “What we see today is the product of just over two years of no-compromise innovation to deliver clean, safe and affordable mobility, supported by our €30 billion investment in electrification and software through 2025. The STLA Medium platform demonstrates the power of the global Stellantis technical community, delivering products that are hyper-focused on our customers and rewriting long-held assumptions of transportation as we drive for carbon net zero by 2038.”

What the Future Holds

STLA Medium is the first of four global battery electric vehicle (BEV) platforms to underpin the automaker’s future products. The STLA Medium platform possesses impressive adaptability and superb range. More importantly, it is structured to be future-proof; that is to say, modularity permits the architecture to be altered over time, with parameters including the suspension configuration, width, wheelbase, and ride height all being modifiable.
