Jeep Bids Farewell to the EcoDiesel Engine with Limited-Edition Gladiator Rubicon

The farewell tour for Stellantis’ 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6 engine is close to its final stop. The conglomerate announced in the 2022 model year it was pulling the engine from the 2023 Ram 1500 lineup, and a perusal through the configurator at the Ram site indicates the engine is gone.
Jeep made a similar announcement last year (2022), celebrating the retirement with a Wrangler Rubicon FarOut Edition that bundled some cosmetic modifications with the oil-burner and an optional combination not otherwise available. That Wrangler had a starting price tag of just over $64,000 MSRP (Plus destination fee) before options. Now, it is the Jeep Gladiator pickup truck’s turn to send off the EcoDiesel, with the Jeep truck receiving a limited-production FarOut Edition.
The Perks of the Limited-Edition Jeep Gladiator Rubicon
The 2023 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon FarOut truck is held to 1,000 units, each priced at $71,790 MSRP after the $1,795 destination charge. As of the writing of this article, ordering is open through the end of September 2023, with deliveries anticipated in the third quarter of this year (2023). The exclusive optional combination incorporates the diesel and the Rock-Trac full-time four-wheel drive with its two-speed transfer case and 4.0:1 low-range gear ratio; typically, that gear ratio requires the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine. Additional features include the following:
- A “Diesel 3.0L” graphic on the hood
- Body-colored fender flares
- A spray-in bedliner
- A steel bumper
- “FarOut” and “3.0 D” tailgate badges
- 17-inch black polished wheels on 33-inch tires
The cabin is also dressed in black leather with red accents and all-weather floor mats.
The FarOut Edition Package
The official price breakdown is $12,100 MSRP for the FarOut Edition package above the Rubicon and a number of baked-in options. For example, the 2023 Gladiator FarOut comes equipped with the Cold Weather Group, the Safety Group, the Mopar Black Satin Grille, the LED Lighting Group, and the Trailer-Tow and Heavy-Duty Electrical Group. It is available for ordering through the end of September 2023, with deliveries commencing in the third quarter of 2023.
The exclusive feature of the FarOut Edition is undoubtedly the pairing of the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6 with the Rock-Trac full-time four-wheel drive system. This combination offers outstanding off-road capability and produces best-in-class 442 pound-feet of torque for grappling with any terrain. The EcoDiesel V-6 engine generates exceptional efficiency and power, making it a popular choice among Jeep enthusiasts. It is worth noting, however, that once the Gladiator FarOut departs, Jeep’s pickup truck will continue with just the Pentastar V-6 and an eight-speed automatic or a six-speed manual transmission.
The Heritage of the EcoDiesel
The EcoDiesel engine has formed a significant part of the Jeep lineup, providing a balance of off-road capability, power, and efficiency. Its retirement marks the end of an era for Jeep consumers who have come to appreciate its dependability and performance. Even though the EcoDiesel is going away, Jeep continues to innovate and present new technologies to enhance the driving experience.
Indeed, Jim Morrison, senior vice president and head of Jeep brand North America, elaborates further: “As the Jeep brand continues its drive to electrification, we are phasing out EcoDiesel technology with the final, limited-edition Gladiator Rubicon FarOut. Limited to 1,000 vehicles for the 2023 model year, the special-edition Gladiator Rubicon FarOut further builds on the industry’s only open-air pickup truck infused with Trail Rated capability and best-in-class truck utility.”
As the Jeep brand moves forward without the EcoDiesel engine, there are intriguing developments on the horizon.
