As the SUV market grows, automakers are introducing new models and updating existing ones to keep up with the competition. Two popular midsize SUVs are the 2024 Dodge Durango and the 2024 Toyota 4Runner. Even though these vehicles have different aesthetics, they share some similarities. This article explores how these two automobiles stack up against each other.

Parallels Between Rivals

The 2024 Dodge Durango and the 2024 Toyota 4Runner are two of the most prominent midsize crossovers. To that end, they provide spacious interiors, remarkable off-road capabilities, and a vast array of features to make driving more enjoyable and convenient. However, one has a greater set of strengths than the other. In terms of off-road prowess, the Durango and 4Runner excel. For example, the Durango comes equipped with standard rear-wheel drive, although all-wheel drive is standard on the SRT 392 and SRT Hellcat trims. The 4Runner, meanwhile, features a standard four-wheel-drive system. Both automobiles offer superb ground clearance and skid plates to protect the undercarriage.

It is worth noting that regarding interior space, the Durango is slightly larger, offering up to seven seats and more cargo room than the 4Runner. In turn, the Toyota contender has a durable and rugged interior with easy-to-clean materials that can withstand heavy use. As for amenities, both vehicles have several standard and available options, such as smartphone integration, touchscreen infotainment systems, and advanced safety features.Ā

That said, the Dodge Durango comes outfitted with a more contemporary and technologically-focused interior, with features such as a digital driver display and a larger touchscreen unit. The UConnect infotainment system in the Durango is available with either an 8.4- or a 10.1-inch touchscreen with a streamlined navigation system. According to experts, ā€œWired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, though wireless connectivity is optional.ā€ Other noteworthy technological updates include wireless device charging and Amazon Alexa.

Significant Differences

Regardless of their similarities, the 2024 Dodge Durango and the 2024 Toyota 4Runner have notable differences. One crucial difference is the type of engine that powers each vehicle. The Durango undoubtedly offers more variety, with powertrains ranging from a 292-horsepower 3.6-liter V-6 paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission to a supercharged 6.2-liter V-8. The latter accelerates up to 710 horsepower and produces 654 pound-feet of torque. For reference, the SRT Hellcat only requires 3.5 seconds to dash from zero to 60 miles per hour. Every 4Runner, on the other hand, is motivated by only one engine option, a 270-horsepower 4.0-liter V-6 paired with a five-speed automatic transmission.

Additionally, the Durango has a higher towing capacity than the 4Runner. The Dodge can pull 6,200 pounds compared with the Toyota’s 5,000 pounds. Another key difference is the seating. The Durango offers three rows of seats for up to seven occupants, while the standard 4Runner has two rows seating five. Of note, the Toyota has available third-row seating in the SR5 and Limited trims. Moreover, Dodge claims the Durango has second-row ā€œfold-and-tumble seatsā€ that can collapse and flip up. The Durango also boasts a more expansive third row than the cramped confines provided by the 4Runner SUV’s optional third row. To clarify, owners get 33.5 inches of rear legroom in the Dodge versus 29.3 inches in the Toyota.

Overall, when deciding between the 2024 Dodge Durango and the 2024 Toyota 4Runner, consumers should consider their priorities. For example, the Durango has a more practical third row, more modern amenities, and more power propelling its engines than the 4Runner.
