The 2025 Jeep Gladiator: An Extension of the 4xe Plug-In Hybrid Lineup

Jeep confirmed on May 3, 2024, it will debut the Gladiator 4xe plug-in hybrid sometime next year (2025). The “Go Anywhere, Do Anything” brand is currently enjoying great success with its 4xe plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). For example, the Wrangler 4xe debuted in 2021, and the Grand Cherokee 4xe followed one year later in 2022. Brand CEO Antonio Filosa did not reveal anything more than the model’s vague arrival date in his LinkedIn post, but the pickup will likely share its plug-in powertrain with the Wrangler.
The SUV comes equipped with a starter generator, a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, and an electric motor in the eight-speed automatic gearbox. The total system output delivers 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. Of note, the 4xe arrives following the automaker’s decision to phase out the EcoDiesel engine option for the Gladiator. The new plug-in hybrid will join the 3.6-liter V-6-powered variant that accelerates up to 285 horsepower and produces 260 pound-feet of torque, making the hybrid the most powerful choice.
The Potential of a Third Jeep PHEV
The manufacturer would not confirm the exact arrival date of the Gladiator 4xe, instead passing along a past statement that said the brand would electrify its entire lineup by the 2025 model year. That said, Jeep’s Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe are the No. 1 and No. 2 best-selling plug-in hybrids in the United States. Granted, Jeep Gladiator sales numbers have not equaled the Wrangler, but no one expected that to occur.
The recently launched limited edition Gladiator NightHawk package, bundling popular appearance, functional, and convenience options at a compelling price, might suggest Jeep wants an uptick in pickup truck sales. Adding a plug-in hybrid version to the Gladiator lineup could do the trick nicely for midsize truck customers who are not ready to go all-in with battery-only vehicles.
Jeep’s Official Statement
In his LinkedIn post, Filosa referred to Jeep owners who value choice and freedom of expression, declaring, “It’s that freedom – open-air freedom with removable door and top options, the freedom of expression through color and customization, the freedom to choose the energy that moves you – that Jeep is so famous for.” He continued, “Next year, we’ll extend that freedom of choice even further with a Gladiator 4xe option.”
It is worth noting that Jeep has not announced the range, price details, or battery capacity for a 2025 Jeep Gladiator 4xe at this time. However, the most likely estimate is that the numbers would be similar to those of the current Jeep Wrangler 4xe. On the plug-in hybrid Wrangler, the high-voltage lithium-ion battery that propels the electric motor has a capacity of 17 kilowatt-hours, resulting in an EPA-estimated all-electric range of 22 miles. On the other hand, the current Gladiator comes outfitted with a 19.4-inch longer wheelbase than the Wrangler, so specifying a larger battery for the hybrid powertrain should not be constrained by space.
