Jeep Unveils the Flagship Grand Wagoneer of the Future
Jeep unveiled its latest Grand Wagoneer concept, and it is quite spacious to say the least. The pre-production concept rides on 24-inch wheels, and judging by the glossy images, they certainly don’t appear to be oversized. As the Wagoneer nameplate returns, it’s destined to be Jeep’s new flagship. Jeepers have been waiting for the return of the nameplate for almost 30 years — the last Grand Wagoneer drove off the assembly line in 1991. Jeep used the name here and there for a few Grand Cherokee trims over the years, but this marks the return of the Wagoneer nameplate as a standalone model.
In fact, Jeep actually made it clear that it won’t be a single model — when the production vehicle arrives in 2021, there’ll be a standard-wheelbase Wagoneer and an extended-length Grand Wagoneer model. The concept shown at the press conference (pictured above) represents the blueprint for what will be the top-tier, fully-loaded Grand Wagoneer model. Jeep will finally enter the three-row luxury SUV segment, a first since the brand discontinued the Commander model more than a decade ago.
Packing tons of features, luxury, and flash, the Grand Wagoneer is expected to hone in on all that Jeep Americana it’s known for and modernize the concept. The pre-production Jeep Grand Wagoneer boasts a shiny chrome grille, with Obsidian black accents, and a horizontal LED lighting detail that sprawls across the seven-slot grille. The headlights even feature actual teak wood trim. There’s plenty of polished aluminum as well, both inside the vehicle’s cabin and on its exterior.
The idea of luxury really kicks in once we open the door and glance at the Grand Wagoneer’s cabin. Jeep went as far as designing a dashboard that includes a separate touchscreen for the front-seat passenger. Second-row passengers shouldn’t worry, Jeep also made sure they get their own individual touchscreens as well. There’s even a central screen for climate control. All in all, the Jeep Grand Wagoneer has up to 45 inches of screen width across its dashboard alone.
Other perks include the addition of the first automotive sound system powered by McIntosh, including 23 speakers and a 24-channel amp. Additional details are lacking for now, and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) — Jeep’s parent company — will likely go back to working on the pre-production Grand Wagoneer to iron out any other kinks. Production of this American icon will return to Detroit, the heartland of the American automotive segment, showing Jeep’s commitment to the city that saw its rise and bolstered the brand for over 80 years.
Jeep will likely take its time before debuting the official production model, but this latest reveal is enough to keep tongues wagging until then.
