The Future of Dodge to be Electrified
It’s hard to get automotive enthusiasts to agree on anything, but gearheads do agree that we are currently living through the greatest golden age of muscle cars. It may feel asinine to some, but nowadays it isn’t hard to find rather inexpensive vehicles that top 400 horsepower and are available for both work and play. In fact, for the last several years the Dodge brand has been engaged in an insane game of topping itself and its massive horsepower figures model year after model year. The automaker’s Hellcat V8 has readily become one of the most powerful engines ever made at a relatively accessible price point, but Dodge knows its days are numbered. So what does the future hold for Dodge in an automotive world that’s rapidly changing? Electrification, not to mention the performance figures it brings, appears to be on the horizon.
In a recent interview with CNBC, Dodge CEO Tim Kuniskis alluded to electrification after brazenly conceding that the brand’s hefty V8 engines don’t have much of a shelf life left to them. Currently, not only does Dodge not offer any electrified vehicles, it’s also the home of the almighty Hellcat, an engine that’s resting under the hood of many, many vehicles. While the Hellcat and other adjacent engines and their imminent demise lingers on the horizon, Kuniskis emphasized that the days of incredible prowess and high horsepower are only just beginning.
“The days of an iron block supercharged 6.2-liter V8 are numbered. They’re absolutely numbered because of all the compliance costs. But the performance that those vehicles generate is not numbered,” Kuniskis said.
Kuniskis isn’t wrong, in the last few years, automakers have churned out more and more hybrid and all-electric performance vehicles that end up exceeding traditional internal combustion counterparts. Currently, several niche automakers such as Pininfarina and Tesla, have unveiled vehicles with electric powertrains that pack quite the punch — from nearly developing 2,000 horsepower to reportedly reaching 60 mph in under two seconds.
“I’m super excited about the future of electric because I think it’s what’s going to allow us to not fall off the cliff. Without that technology, without electrification, this is 1972 right now, this thing is going to end,” added Kuniskis.
Even though the future is electric, Kuniskis isn’t worried. In fact, judging from his appearance on CNBC it seems like Kuniskis is looking forward to the challenge of designing and bringing to life powerful electric vehicles that don’t skimp on efficiency or prowess. Electric power already exists, and it’s been used to create some of the most powerful cars we’ve ever seen, with insane levels of horsepower and instantaneous torque. The only downside is that the noise and rumble associated with V8s will eventually fade from the collective experience.
