Jeep Magneto Concept

A gasoline-free Jeep Wrangler may soon be in the works and it will be based on the Jeep Magneto that was revealed back in March during the 2021 Easter Jeep Safari. A hybrid version of the Wrangler currently exists in the new 4xe Hybrid platform, but Jeep wants to get on the EV bandwagon just like the rest of the automakers. While still just a concept, the Jeep Magneto is the building block for Jeep’s all-electric Wrangler that eliminates the need for the internal combustion engine. For Jeep, the switch from gas to electric is a step in the right direction to reduce carbon emissions and to instill a more eco-friendly brand image.

The Jeep Magneto

The Magneto platform uses a 2020 Wrangler Rubicon 2-door for the chassis and comes equipped with a custom axial flux electric motor that is paired to a six-speed manual transmission. Power figures for the Magneto are rated at 285hp and 273 lb-ft of torque provided by its four Webasto air-cooled lithium-ion battery packs. This powertrain configuration puts the battery setup on par with Jeep’s Pentastar V6 engine.

With a respectable 0-60mph acceleration time of 6.8 seconds, the Magneto is a worthy vehicle to consider buying in the future thanks to its zero-emissions setup, 35-inch mud-terrain tires, and a JPP 2-inch lift mod. For now, the Magneto is in the experimental phase that involves testing its characteristics in the areas of performance, design, charging, and off-road capability.

Concept to Production

Being a concept vehicle does not mean that it will stay a concept for much longer as Jeep is actively considering releasing a fully electric Wrangler in the near future. Most automakers today are looking to transition to an area of sustainability and battery-powered vehicles achieve that goal. The Wrangler nameplate will be the first Jeep vehicle to receive the EV treatment, but it won’t certainly be the last in Jeep’s lineup. In terms of its release date, there is no exact confirmation as of yet when it will be available for sale, but rumors suggest that by the end of 2021 or early 2022 we could have something that is production-ready.

Fully Electric Jeep Wrangler

The benefits of an all-electric Jeep Wrangler include instant acceleration and very good torque numbers that provide the vehicle with ample power to get going on or off-road. With a battery-powered Wrangler, drivers never have to go to another gas station ever again, which can be a breath of fresh air for some daily commuters. Most automakers are pushing initiatives to normalize charging EVs at home with the use of at-home DC fast chargers that give consumers the convenience to save time by not going to a public charging station. In addition, owning an electric Jeep Wrangler will be good for the environment because it won’t pollute the air with harmful carbon emissions.
