Jeep is Testing New Safety Alert System
Jeep announces its intention to develop a new safety alert system that warns drivers of potential dangers on the road they cannot see. According to the company, drivers will be alerted via in-car notifications that display warning messages on the vehicle’s infotainment screen(s). In the bigger picture, Stellantis announced a pilot program to test several new safety alert systems. The company has named a couple of these systems “Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC) and “Safety Cloud Technologies.” They use cellular 5G connectivity along with “localized systems” such as cameras on the intersection to collect data and communicate the safety risks to approaching vehicles in the case of an accident up ahead.
Prioritizing Vehicle Safety
With the advancement of vehicle technology, connectivity speeds, improved hardware, and more capable software, overall safety is also enhanced. According to Head of Software Business and Product Management, Mamatha Chamarthi, pilot program testing begins at the University of Michigan’s Mcity Test Facility with a pair of 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe PHEVs with Unconnect. The main objective of the testing is to evaluate how the alert system impacts driver and pedestrian safety, seeking potential improvements in traffic and emergency responsiveness.
Safety Program Expansion
A second portion of the system also includes advanced warnings that send notifications to partner vehicles when emergency responders are nearby. Stellantis also plans to work with the local department of transportation to expand the program into the Detroit area and run several tests on Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, and Ram vehicles. Jeep aims at having Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC) technology in its products before 2030.
What Consumers Can Expect
Future Jeep owners will experience increased safety while out on the road, giving them extra peace of mind. Jeep vehicles equipped with the Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC) technology means that drivers will be alerted of road hazards and dangers that cannot be readily seen. This technology is similar to what Google Maps has implemented in its system, where the driver can report a danger on the road via a selection of road hazard options. After selecting a road hazard, the hazard is then published on the route the driver is traveling in, and other drivers can see it and be notified when they are within a specific range of the hazard.
