Dodge Plans on Discontinuing its Durango SUV by 2024

2021 Dodge Durango SRT

Since 1997, the Dodge Durango nameplate has offered consumers off-road driving, performance, and admirable horsepower. It’s the ideal vehicle to travel with family and friends while sporting a V8 engine for a more exciting drive. With a production run of 24 years, the Durango SUV has undergone various model updates and changes. But after nearly two decades, this family SUV may have to take off its muscle car suit and retire, according to recent automotive news. A new image of the Dodge brand is soon to take over with the release of its all-electric muscle car models in 2024, leaving little to no room for a gasoline-hungry Durango to continue. While the decision to pull the plug on the Durango is not confirmed yet, there is no news of a potential successor until Stellantis decides to release more information.

Discontinuing the Dodge Durango

Production of the current 2021 Durango SUV is expected to continue until 2024, but there is no indication that a “next-generation Durango” is in the works. If Dodge wants to keep its Durango alive, the automaker might convert its powertrain from gasoline to all-electric and perhaps introduce an all-electric Durango SUV. However, this is speculation more than anything else. This depends on the direction Dodge wants to take.

Powerful Engine but Less Reliable

One of the top-selling features of the Durango is the unparalleled horsepower it has under its hood. The Durango offers some of the most powerful engines in its class, up to 710hp on the SRT Hellcat model. It remains a very compelling performance SUV for the active family that desires to have that extra bit of power. Regarding practicality, that depends. The Durango is an excellent purchase for consumers who make speed and muscular exterior styling a priority on their shopping list. Its top speed of 180mph, a towing capacity of 8,700 lbs, and available third-row seating further bolster its selling value, but it all comes at the cost of fuel economy. Constant visits to the gas pump are expected in a Durango. Amid the electric vehicle movement that will enter full swing in the next few decades, the gasoline Durango is going to lag if it remains unchanged.

Investing in More Eco-friendly Technologies

As more and more automakers are shifting toward battery-powered technologies, electric vehicles will take precedence over their gasoline-powered counterparts. This is due to many car companies wanting to go “green” and cut on carbon emissions to have a more eco-friendly brand image. For the Dodge brand, its first significant step toward electrification is introducing its all-electric muscle cars in 2024. After that, more investment toward Dodge-branded electric vehicles is very likely.
