The Chrysler Airflow concept has been seen for enough years and variations to believe it is the production-ready crossover that will be the first all-electric vehicle for the Chrysler brand when it goes on sale in 2025. As a matter of fact, at one point, that was the plan. However, Chrysler is currently crafting a new, sizable two-row crossover, which has a more modern aesthetic than the Airflow concept. The change comes at the behest of Chrysler Brand CEO Chris Feuell. Stellantis design chief Ralph Gilles explained that Feuell “wanted a statement that had literally zero to do with anything that you have seen today, even the Airflow concept car. It is evolving in a new direction.”

A Magnificent Place to Start

As a compelling crossover, the Airflow was a great starting point. Nonetheless, under Feuell’s new direction, the team aimed to surpass their own design. The result is a design that both Gilles and Feuell are giddy about. It is worth noting that the redesign is far enough along to have been previewed in Los Angeles earlier in 2023 and, judging by reactions, Feuell claims, “We have a hit on our hands.” Gilles goes further, stating, “It blew the doors off.”

The Airflow concept was created on the same platform that underpins the Chrysler Pacifica minivan, but the production crossover will rely on the manufacturer’s STLA Large platform designed predominantly for electric vehicles. This decision has a host of benefits, from its dynamics to its flat floor with batteries laid in the floor, more advanced electrical architecture, and better proportions.

Modern Styling

The production crossover has some of the Airflow’s characteristics and aesthetics but has a more technologically-oriented and modern design, both inside and out. For example, it will have several elements of STLA technology. It will be provided with both 400- and 800-volt systems for quick charging. Buyers can choose between a standard and long-range iteration, with a range of up to 400 miles.

The Chrysler brand wants to be on the front lines of advanced technology and will be a first adopter of new technologies in its vehicles when the time is right. The brand aims for what it calls “clean mobility and seamless technology” with sustainable materials to enhance communication, help the consumer be more productive in daily life, and improve mobility management. Systems must be activated with a touch or two, user-friendly, and accessible. More importantly, it must all be obtainable at a reasonable price.

The All-New Name

To be clear, the Airflow name is for the concept only. In fact, “There is a group of people who love the Airflow name and just as many who beg us not to use it,” Feuell declared. The brand has been collaborating with naming consultants, and there is a short list of names in the works, which is a combination of well-known throwbacks and new names. Considering the direction Chrysler is moving toward, it is understandable that the likelihood of new names is higher as the automaker works to reposition itself.

Even though the new look will not be revealed to the public until the 2024 model year, the production-intended automobile was displayed to dealers who need to be aware that there is a new vehicle on the horizon to keep up their excitement and reassure them that the company is investing in the Chrysler brand.

Chrysler is pushing to reach beyond the plateau it has found itself in by devoting the brand to renovation.
