Dodge Announces Electric Muscle Cars to Arrive by 2024
A new era of muscle cars is on the horizon, and Dodge is working to develop their design and electrical framework behind the scenes. Although Dodge is still early in the process, the company is mindful that EVs are the future and is taking the necessary steps to create an eco-friendly vehicle platform that is efficient and that retains authentic American muscle car power and performance. However, before EV muscle cars enter the market, a final tribute is possible, with one final model marking the road’s end for HEMI V8 engines. According to Dodge CEO Tim Kuniskis, gasoline-powered muscle cars and their EV counterparts will co-exist for some time until consumers completely transition from gasoline vehicles to electric ones. There is also the underlying challenge of convincing consumers who enjoy the sounds of big engines to adopt quiet EVs, but that is a dilemma Dodge is confident it can resolve.
A Whole New Muscle Car Platform
Dodge says the new EV muscle car platform will be available in 2024, but this does not mean current gasoline-powered muscle cars will die in 2024. Mr. Kuniskis also says there may be a last “Hurrah” for big HEMI V8 engines in the form of a final edition muscle car. However, more information is needed to clarify this. Similarly, the discontinuation of gasoline-powered muscle cars will follow the same path as the Viper, the company’s first-ever supercar it discontinued in 2017.
Transitioning From Gasoline to Electric
The transition from gasoline to electric presents a significant challenge for Dodge to convince potential buyers to adopt an EV muscle car that lacks the engine grunt of a V8 engine. However, Dodge remains secretive about its upcoming all-electric muscle car, revealing little to no details about its appearance or what battery configurations it will have. Dodge only provides us with a one-minute teaser video about what is to come soon, leaving consumers in suspense. There is also speculation that Dodge plans on taking inspiration from performance EV batteries that Formula-E race cars use and even from some of the top-tier Tesla vehicles like the Model S and Model X.
Keeping the Muscle Car Spirit Alive
It’s very important for Dodge to stay true to its roots while not letting modern EV technology take away what makes muscle cars unique in the first place, which is big horsepower and speed. Some of Dodge’s early marketing material is already viewable on various social media and online outlets that state the company “will not sell electric cars” but instead is committed to selling “American E-Muscle.”
