Jeep plans to launch four pure electric vehicles by 2025, and one of the 100 percent electric vehicles is a luxury trim. As of May 2023, the upscale trim is codenamed Jeep Wagoneer S for “speed.” The Jeep Wagoneer S is not a full-size vehicle and is not related to the body-on-frame Jeep Wagoneer and Jeep Grand Wagoneer. It is a midsize SUV, slightly smaller than the Grand Cherokee. The SUV finally has a name, which will potentially be revealed in June, but the process of coming to a decision was a long and arduous one.
A Globally Acceptable Name
Jeep executives had a list of promising names, a blend of new and classic names that were meticulously evaluated. Ultimately, however, they expanded their search for the ideal name to the public arena in the 2022 model year, thus involving enthusiasts in the selection process. It became a phenomenal contest that attracted 80,000 submissions from around the globe, but none of them were satisfactory for the automaker. Eventually, the name was selected from a short list Jeep officials had already compiled. Jeep Brand CEO Christian Meunier revealed limited information, simply stating, “It is a very simple name.”
The Look of the SUV
The Jeep Wagoneer S has a striking exterior but does not miss out on the brand’s signature design cues. As a Jeep vehicle, the Wagoneer S is boxier than most Japanese and European luxury SUVs on the market. That said, according to MotorTrend, full-size Wagoneers, for example, are grandiose three-row SUVs accompanied by large profiles. The S, on the other hand, is a two-row SUV that yields very little resemblance to its siblings.
A clean bodyline accentuates the windswept profile. As the roof slopes down, it forms a sporty yet classy exterior aesthetic. In the conventional manner for Jeeps, the doors are plain, but they have flush-fitting handles that help reduce drag on the road. It will perhaps be the most polished Jeep to have debuted in years. Ralph Gilles, Stellantis chief design officer for the Jeep brand explained the concept behind a distinct design language for this Wagoneer trim: “I think there is an iconic light signature that we are working on. The rest of it is about the presence of the vehicle, the cleanliness of the design. I’m really trying to establish the Wagoneer line as clean, premium, not chaotic. Something that is easy on the eyes, timeless. The interior is as gorgeous as the big brother.”
The Need for Speed
The STLA Large platform is developed by Stellantis for electric vehicles that mainly focus on the United States market. As such, the manufacturer has confirmed that the platform will feature an EPA-estimated range of approximately 400 miles. It is possible that the rear motor could be relatively more powerful than the front motor, while the front motor could conceivably be turned off to decrease energy consumption in an “Eco” drive mode. There could also be two or more power output levels, as Jeep has verified the vehicle’s 600 horsepower acceleration and estimated 0 to 60 miles per hour time of 3.5 seconds.
The timing for opening up reservations for the Wagoneer S is expected to be announced in June of 2023. While it is known that the automobile will be constructed in North America, the company has not declared where.
