Practical Prospects Based on Chrysler’s Halcyon Concept Vehicle

Chrysler needs new products, so the reveal of the Halcyon concept was welcome news. Hopefully, the Halcyon is a turning point for the automaker because it only has the Pacifica and Pacifica Hybrid remaining in its lineup. Of note, there is no indication that the Halcyon will become a production model, but it will inspire the next generation of electric Chrysler vehicles. In true concept form, it is meant to preview technologies of the future, and there are five that should see the light of day.
#1: Utilizing Over 90 Percent Sustainable Materials
To attain “harmony with the planet,” Chrysler relied on 95 percent sustainable material to create the interior of the concept. It is a necessary advancement given that electric vehicles are not and never have been emissions-free. Manufacturers must devise other ways to offset emissions to compensate for all the mining required for batteries.
For example, the Melange Heather fabric is 100 percent recyclable, while the Solar White suede is composed of 73 percent PET bottles. Moreover, the wood used for the inserts is sustainably produced and tracked throughout its lifecycle. The Brushed Black Copper door and door sill film are used rather than paint due to emissions generated during the painting process. Chrysler even used crushed, recyclable CDs for a few interior inserts and the Chrysler Wing logo.
#2: Inductive Charging Technology
In theory, the Halcyon should be able to drive forever without needing a charge, but a few things are required for that to happen. Chrysler took aerodynamic efficiency to a new level, but the vehicle was also designed with inductive charging technology in mind. To clarify, there are sensors underneath the automobile able to communicate with sensors on the road. America’s first wireless charging road opened in Detroit in November 2023.
At this point (2024), it is only a quarter-mile long and more of a concept than a production-ready system. In other words, there are coils underneath the road, and they charge an electric vehicle as it drives along. If a long enough road is constructed, it would be unnecessary for an electric vehicle to charge. In the long run, these roads would also allow electric vehicles to carry a smaller battery pack, as charging would be rendered irrelevant.
#3: A Soothing Cabin Atmosphere
Despite boasting a 15.6-inch touchscreen unit, Chrysler sought to create a “digital detox.” It partially succeeded with the 360-degree view and the augmented-reality full-screen head-up display (HUD). Nonetheless, the Stargazing Mode and dimmable glass canopy are particularly relaxing features. The glass canopy and windshield can modify the opacity for privacy. In this mode, the HUD will project constellations and stars.
#4: Autonomous Driving
Stellantis’ STLA AutoDrive technology will make Level 4 Autonomous driving possible. It is worth noting that the automation at Level 4 is high. Indeed, the vehicle is entirely in control, and the driver does not need to pay attention. With the Halcyon capable of driving itself, the owner can ask it to manage all the monotonous driving responsibilities, such as driving on a freeway or sitting in traffic.
#5: Adjustable Steering Wheel
On the other hand, if the owner wants to drive, they can simply utilize the voice recognition feature to inform the automobile. It will then deploy a steering wheel for the individual to take over. Even though the brand did not provide any power figures, it is evident from the standard features that it wants the Halcyon to be entertaining.
