On June 27th, 2023, Stellantis launched Free2move Charge to provide customers with a complete suite of electric vehicle charging software, hardware, and services. The new business is a “360-degree ecosystem” that will essentially bring energy and charging management to electric vehicle owners rather than them searching for charging stations. The notion is part of the all-new Stellantis Charging and Energy Business Unit.

In other words, Free2move Charge aims to address electric vehicle customer needs in their businesses, at home, and on the go. Free2move Charge Business provides fleets a full suite of energy and charging services, including right-sizing of charging infrastructure, estimation of initial and future running costs, maintenance, installation, and public charging access while on the go. Free2move Charge Home, meanwhile, will offer private consumers support with financing, installation, warranty of home charging, and other energy services and hardware.

Ricardo Stamatti, senior vice president, Stellantis Charging & Energy Business Unit explained how the endorsement of electric vehicles has influenced Stellantis’ decision to expand: “As the pace of mainstream EV adoption accelerates, our customers need us to be more than just a mobility provider. We are taking the lead in establishing a dedicated business unit that will support our bold electrification strategy and act as a natural extension of our iconic brands. Free2move Charge is the first product rolling out, exemplifying our purpose of delivering performance, value, sustainability and electrified mobility freedom for all.”

How the Kernel of an Idea Grew

The idea behind the new business is boiled down to a simple guarantee, dubbed the e-ABC Promise. It is short for “easy to Always Be Charged.” The goal for the business is to work in tandem with electric vehicle owners to assure their vehicles are always charged while doing so in an environmentally-friendly and efficient way. This should minimize the cost of ownership for users as well. Stellantis notes Free2move Charge is a crucial tool in its Dare Forward 2030 strategic plan, with Stellantis focusing on 100 percent of its passenger car sales in Europe being electric by 2030 and 50 percent in the United States by that time.

The Capabilities of a New Innovation

The business is built upon three pillars for electric vehicle owners to use.

  • Free2move Charge Home provides options that can range from AC charging cables and wall boxes to Vehicle-2-Home, Vehicle-2-Grid, and complete energy management systems with features like inductive robot charging and touch-free wireless solutions under development for future releases.
  • Free2move Charge Business takes on all obstacles as a one-stop-shop platform with a whole host of charging and energy services.
  • Free2move Charge GO aims to guarantee access to an expansive network of curated public charging points and includes features like loyalty programs, prepaid packages, reservations, single invoice/billing, and subscriptions.

It will be rolled out in the United States first and then Stellantis’ European markets during the second half of the 2023 model year.

Creating Growth

The electric vehicle charging unit is just the latest move by Stellantis in its expansion efforts of Free2move, which was established in Europe by PSA Group a few years ago. The company has been adding more acquisitions to help enlarge its user base for its mobility unit.
