The 2023 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid Tests the Mettle of SUVs

The much-maligned minivan has had to continually reinvent itself in the United States following its SUV-instigated fall from grace as the family vehicle of choice. To that end, the Chrysler Pacifica might be a minivan, but it has no trouble keeping up with most SUVs. In fact, it is probably better than most SUVs. To clarify, the 2023 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid does a better job handling what most people want out of the SUV. It has third-row seating, cavernous storage space, a solid infotainment system, and superb mileage. It also boasts a comfortable ride.
The Drive
Behind the wheel of the Pacifica Hybrid, in EV mode, the acceleration and ride are remarkable. Like most hybrid vehicles, when it runs on battery-only power, the acceleration is swift, smooth, and quiet. In addition, Chrysler was able to pair that with a suspension that curbs the body roll and uneven feel of more dated minivans. Instead, drivers get an experience closer to an entry-level luxury SUV than a traditional van. On the freeway, the hybrid propulsion system helps get the van up to freeway speeds easily. Granted, with a depleted battery, reaching 65 miles per hour takes a bit longer, but it is nothing that should weigh on the minds of potential buyers.
When the Pacifica Hybrid does have a full battery, Chrysler claims it can go 33 miles on a charge. Sources declare, “As the battery charge diminishes, the vehicle seamlessly transitions to its gasoline engine. Working alongside a 3.6 liter V6 engine with a 16.5 gallon tank, the driving range of the Chrysler extends up to 520 miles.” Not to mention, minivans have the upper hand over most SUVs for fuel economy, generally getting between 24 miles per gallon and 30 miles per gallon on the highway. There are some hybrid SUVs, but they add to the initial purchase price and still may not surpass the hybrid Pacifica.
Cargo Space and Engine Power
Minivans have lower floors, which give them ground clearance but also additional space for third-row passengers and cargo. Behind the third row of seats, minivans have at least 31 cubic feet of storage, while mid-size SUVs have less than 20 cubic feet. As mentioned, the vehicle comes equipped with third-row seating. Courtesy of the sliding doors and lower floor level than a large SUV, it is easier to get in and out of all the back seats. If the owner needs more storage than seating, with the pull of a cord and some quick folding, that third row disappears into the floor of the Pacifica.
Underscoring the efficiency of the 2023 Chrysler Pacifica are technical specifications that highlight its prowess, including a powertrain run by an Atkinson-cycle version of a 3.6-liter V-6 engine, that reaches from zero miles per hour to 60 miles per hour in 7.3 seconds, yielding a total system output of 260 horsepower, all powered by a 16-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery. This capability looks like a direct appeal to people considering purchasing an SUV.
Infotainment
Whether a person is driving the van on the interstate or in the city, Chrysler ensured to keep the technology inside the van up to date. The Uconnect infotainment system is simple to navigate without too many submenus while also supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Additionally, one’s favorite features can be dragged and dropped to the bottom of the screen for quick access. The 10.1-inch touchscreen unit is also crisp and bright, cutting through any glare that might wash out the display.
