Dodge was one of the first automakers to witness the budding promise of SUVs as family vehicles when the Durango officially launched in the late 1990s. Coming into its third iteration, the 2023 Dodge Durango now goes after consumer attention among a much larger group of trims, as is to be expected when almost every automaker has a three-row SUV in its lineup. The question then becomes: What, specifically, makes the Durango worthy of being purchased among a slew of competitors? Some key points enter into the Dodge Durango’s overall appeal.

For one thing, it does an outstanding job of integrating utility with an abundance of creature comforts. These characteristics are combined with a confident display of the classic Dodge muscle car design. For example, many Durango trims put the pedal to the metal on 20-inch wheels, which are an excellent complement to the body of the SUV. The front aesthetic has a honeycomb grille over a lower intake, curiously resembling a gaping mouth, and it is made even more aggressive thanks to the SRT trims’ vents, hood scoop, and stylish racing stripes.

The 2023 Dodge Durango has a reasonably bold personality compared to the typical family car, and that adds much-needed character to make a functional SUV feel more like an automobile and less like a domestic appliance. When set up with a V-6 or V-8 engine, the unique rumble guarantees power to the driver. The Durango is undoubtedly ready to haul the load, as it can tow up to 8,700 pounds without much effort. That would be the equivalent of small to mid-size trailers.

Durango SRT Hellcat

For 2023, Dodge has affirmed that the Durango will yet again be provided in the form of the SRT Hellcat, a monstrous ride with a supercharged 6.2-liter V-8, which supplies 710 horsepower and 640 pound-feet of torque. In other words, this is the same as a 0-60 mile per hour sprint in 3.5 seconds, an 11.5-second quarter mile, and a 180 mile per hour top speed. The Hellcat’s engine can undoubtedly accelerate the vehicle at breakneck speed. It has been groomed to be the muscle car of the mid-size SUV segment. Interestingly, after the SRT Hellcat made its first public appearance in 2021, it was supposed to exist only as a one-year trim. Still, the brand has changed its mind about that, resurrecting the vehicle to blow rivals out of the water with the Durango’s high-performance rate. Rumors have been buzzing that a fully redesigned Durango is being contemplated, but, as it stands, it is uncertain when this mystery vehicle will be making its debut.

Quality and Comfort

The 2023 Dodge Durango is equipped with superb handling and accurate steering. It is a surprisingly deft vehicle but remains firm on the road, courtesy of those 20-inch wheels. The interior cabin is spacious, well-finished, and silent, with room for five people in the base trim, whereas seven can be seated comfortably in trims with the optional third row. Even when performance is the primary concern, the Durango SRT can be pragmatic as an SUV should be. It can store 17 cubic feet in the cargo hold or 85 cubic feet with all the seats folded. Small-item storage is necessary for a three-row SUV, and the Durango has ample cupholders and cubbies for all passengers. A new standard for 2023 is heated front seats, relaxing and supportive, as are the second-row captain’s chairs.
