The 2023 Jeep Gladiator provides an astonishing balance of family-friendly practicality, utility, and off-road prowess. Finally, there is a Jeep vehicle that can tow the camper, take on rugged terrain, haul dirt bikes in the bed, and bring the kids along. No Wrangler could ever manage all these tasks, and the Gladiator also compares well to conventional midsize pickup trucks. There are a variety of trims, from the base Sport to the all-conquering Rubicon and Mojave and even a sophisticated High Altitude.

Jeep has not altered much about the Gladiator since it launched in the summer of 2019. All receive four-wheel drive with a two-speed transfer case and extract power from either Jeep’s 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine or 3.0-liter six-cylinder turbodiesel. There are, however, always special editions and new equipment, including nine standard trims for 2023 and a varied assortment of available customization and personalization extras.

Performance

Performance-wise, the Gladiator carries over most of the Wrangler’s abilities, even though its extra length of three feet and massive wheelbase does equate to some loss of capability. It also gets fewer powertrain choices, with no plug-in 4xe or Hemi V-8, but the Pentastar and EcoDiesel offer all the necessary power. It is worth noting that the EcoDiesel is more expensive, with a price tag of $4,650 but gets outstanding fuel mileage. As a matter of fact, motorbiscuit.com describes the EcoDiesel as “the more refined choice. It isn’t as loud as the 3.6-liter engine and tows in an effortless manner with smooth transmission shifts.”

Engine Power

Off-road ability is what defines this truck, and it brings the heavy hardware to prove it is bona fide, particularly in the Mojave and Rubicon trims. Granted, there are only two engine options, but both have enough power and torque to accomplish almost any job. As mentioned, the standard unit is the esteemed 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6, generating 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. This engine has leverage because it can be mated to the available six-speed manual transmission.

According to the editors at motorbiscuit.com, “With the gas-powered engine, the Gladiator can tow up to 7,700 lbs, offering the best-in-class gas towing capacity. It can also carry a payload of up to 1,710 lbs.” Available as an option is Jeep’s 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6, delivering 260 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque. The EcoDiesel is useful for clambering over obstacles and towing. Speaking of towing, the 2023 Gladiator diesel can tow up to 6,500 pounds and carry a payload of up to 1,710 pounds.

Fuel Efficiency

The Jeep Gladiator is shaped like a boxy mammoth within the midsize truck class but still returns excellent fuel economy, and its distinction in this department is significantly bolstered by the optional diesel. For example, the 3.6-liter Pentastar Gladiator is rated for 16 miles per gallon in the city and up to 23 miles per gallon on the highway. On the other hand, with the 3.0-liter turbodiesel V-6 engine, the EPA-estimated ratings rise to much healthier levels, with 22 miles per gallon in the city and up to 28 miles per gallon on the highway. Frankly, it boasts the best fuel economy in the midsize truck segment now that the GMC Canyon and Chevrolet Colorado diesels have been discontinued.

Possible Mid-Cycle Refresh

GMC and Chevy are not the only ones to do away with their diesel engine options. Even the Wrangler and Ram 1500 opted to eliminate the diesel as a selection. If the Jeep Gladiator undergoes a mid-cycle refresh, it is possible that its engine could meet the same fate. Nonetheless, it could merely be exchanged for a hybrid setup, making the vehicle even more fuel efficient.
