The current Dodge Challenger and Dodge Charger Scat Pack models are two of today’s most thrilling muscle cars, even though the highly-regarded Hemi V-8 will reach the end of the road in the 2023 model year. In fact, each member of this dynamic duo can go straight from driveway to drag strip without missing a beat. Once they arrive, they can leverage their engines to run the quarter-mile in the low-12-second range. That kind of remarkable performance has deep roots in Dodge’s history, too.

The first Scat Pack took its cues from the Rat Pack. However, while Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis, Jr. were swinging their way through the 1960s, the Dodge team was unadulterated rock and roll. Indeed, by the time 1968 rolled around, Dodge had a fierce lineup of street machines, including the Dodge Charger R/T, the Dodge Coronet R/T, and the Dodge Dart GTS, each of which could be ordered with a 375-horsepower, 440-cubic-inch V-8 engine under the hood.

The Birth of the Term “Scat Pack”

What was missing, however, was a way to unify each of these uniquely named vehicles under a single, world-beating banner. The problem was put to the talented team at the Ross Roy Ad Agency, which came up with the idea of the “Scat Pack” designation that would encompass all of these automobiles.

It was a play on words–as mentioned, the Rat Pack had been Sinatra’s gang of Hollywood pals that became legendary for their partying and the pictures they made together–and as such, Dodge also created a Scat Pack Club that car owners and Mopar fans could join for the very affordable price of $3. For the money, members received a monthly newsletter, a wallet card declaring their loyalty, a jacket patch, a quarterly magazine, a bumper sticker, and a racing guide.

The Scat Pack logo was a variation on the drag-racing Super Bee found on the aptly-named Dodge Super Bee, and collectively, the group of cars was referred to as “the hive.” The marketing team went on the warpath, blanketing magazines, dealerships, and television with references to Scat City and the full lineup of Scat Pack cars.

It is worth noting that the memorabilia was not only an advertising and marketing tactic but also a way for young people to demonstrate what they liked while permitting them to express themselves and feel like they belonged to a group of like-minded people. In other words, despite its inception as a marketing gimmick, the Scat Pack Club was serious about performance.

The Development of the Dodge Scat Pack

Over time, the Scat Pack transformed into more of a Scat package. It referred to dedicated performance-enhancing equipment bundles, often featuring Mopar aftermarket supplies. The latest evolution of the Scat Pack is a track-oriented trim level for the Charger sedan and the Challenger coupe. As expected, though, that has not changed the Scat Pack’s ability “to go away quickly” or “to move fast.” That said, if enthusiasts yearn to sting the competition, the Scat Pack Widebody model is the ideal option. Massive fender flares give the Widebody its name – and an extra 3.5 inches of width versus the standard Scat Pack.

Tucked into those flared fenders are beefier wheels, but drivers can still see the Brembo brake calipers peeking through. This is not merely an appearance package. On the contrary, the Widebody boasts a standard three-mode Bilstein suspension for the curved parts of the road. Meanwhile, for the straightaways, drivers can enjoy a zero to 60 time of just 4.3 seconds.

What the Future Holds for Scat Pack Models

With the upcoming discontinuation of the Hemi V-8 engine, it is unclear what will become of the Scat Pack trim level. Nonetheless, the Scat Pack has embraced the changing tide of society exceedingly well, so it would be unsurprising to view the trim in an electric guise.
